Brenda ("Bre") Lee Stephens has experience as a publisher and professional editor. She's also a university-trained writer who holds an MA in English and Creative Writing: Screenwriting.
As a writer, Bre specializes in short fiction (3,000-5,000 words) and feature-length screenplays. She primarily writes horror, gothic, and vampire short stories that comment on twenty-first century issues, such as sex trafficking and drug addiction. Occasionally, she creates psychological realism that comments on modern thought, morals, and values. An example of this is her work on a short story collection called Heaven and Hell, ten psychological short stories that depict the consequences of decision-making and innocence versus depravity.
Though short fiction is her chosen medium, Bre has crossed over into novel writing. In addition to her short work, she's working on a three-book (non-romance) vampire series. The first book -- and her debut as a novelist -- is The Vampyre Paladin, the story of a doctor who vows to annihilate a vampire underground blood market at the cost of his own humanity. The second book, The Vampire Dagon, inspired by her short story of the same name, tells the doctor's life story before he became a Paladin. The third book, yet to be titled, will charge into the final battle between the doctor and the infamous Dagon, leaving a fight to the end -- winner take all.
When she isn't writing fiction, Bre is busy writing screenplays. Her chosen genres are action and drama. She thrives on tight action and dialogue for a smooth, effortless read. Her debut script, Behind Blind Eyes (2019), is a family drama that follows the life of a professional dancer who goes blind and has to fight depression and isolation to get back to the stage. The script's message to readers is simple: Don't let your disabilities define you! The script deals with the themes of perseverance, family love and support, and self-worth. Bre's next screenplay will be a fantasy/action feature called Warriors (working title), a fantasy story about equality of the sexes. The script follows a female and male warrior who are both destined for greatness and power but need to vanquish an evil threat before taking their rightful places as leaders of their clans.
Prior to writing and publishing, Bre traveled as a professional abstract artist. Though on hiatus, she still enjoys art. She began painting at six years old and was highly influenced by the Abstract Expressionists, especially Jackson Pollack. Since 2008, she's worked in her own style called Colorism, a way of painting mood in various colors so the viewer feels a certain emotion. Her favorite medium has always been acrylics, and she has a deep love for painting on all surfaces, especially tiles, CDs, mirrors, and glass. Her glass vases and mirror pieces are most popular with art enthusiasts and collectors. Her work has been shown in galleries throughout Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, New Mexico, and California.
In addition to her MA in English and Creative Writing: Screenwriting, Bre holds a BA in Art History (summa cum laude) and an M.Ed. in ESL. When time permits, she teaches first-year composition and creative writing, makes appearances at literary events, and judges literary contests. To relax, she listens to KAT-TUN (J-Pop band), reads manga, watches anime, and studies world cultures.
